Had the joy of welcoming Lauren & Sarah for a chemigram workshop last week! Followed by a cafenol development workshop with Faye 💌

Had the best time delivering two digital camera workshops yesterday - with T in the morning and with A + T in the afternoon. Showing people the wonders of photography, both analogue and digital, means the world to me! We had a lovely time exploring slow shutter speed and creating ” light paintings “ with flowers, slow shutter speeds and moving the camera 180 degrees during exposure. Made myself and my pal matching cyanotype dresses using a @vinted Topshop dress from 2010’s. We’ll be wearing these at @campbestival this summer during our cyanotype workshops 👀

I took my nephew to the darkroom on Saturday for his first 'red room' experience! He is really into science and has recently got an experiment book from the library, I knew it was time! I loved sharing this moment with him, especially since he's already tried cyanotype printing. Rufus enjoyed making photograms with his favorite Minecraft and dinosaur items, although he did comment on the messiness of the darkroom as soon as we walked in… noted!
Ps: I attempted to introduce him to a new Gorillaz song, but he surprised me by already knowing the words 🤪

A magical ghostly photo taken by @rosiemayne during our recent digital camera 1:1 session ~ it really was SUPER foggy day, with little inspiration around. Rosie is already an established photographer, but wanted to explore some technical elements with my guidance. I decided to step into the frame to help Rosie explore slow shutter speeds 🤍

Creating hand-printed prints from your negatives offers endless possibilities. For precision, consider using an easel to achieve crisp borders. Alternatively, embrace the handmade aesthetic by printing with sprocket holes visible. There's no one 'right' way - and while I advocate for traditional techniques, my approach is anything but traditional! Here’s a print I made this week from a 2025 visit to the @sg_skygarden in the big smoke 🏙️

Traditional cyanotype printing captures silhouettes and textures in luminous white against rich blue, a process rooted in the 19th century and embraced by artists ever since.

But what if blue is just the beginning?
Tinting introduces colour to your cyanotype before or after exposure. By incorporating natural pigments (such as tea, coffee & wine), watercolour washes, or toned paper, artists can shift the emotional atmosphere of a print - warming it with earthy undertones or softening it with subtle hues.

Why Tint & Tone?
Basic cyanotype printing teaches you the foundation: coating, exposing, rinsing, and revealing that magical blue image. Tinting and toning take you a step further:
• Expanded Colour Palette: Move beyond blue into warm, earthy, or dramatic monochrome tones
• Greater Emotional Range: Match colour mood to subject matter
• Creative Control: Each bath and blend produces subtle variations, making every print one of a kind
• Professional Depth: Elevate simple prints into wall art

In this workshop, you will:
• Learn or revisit the basics of cyanotype printing
• Plan and expose your designs onto UV sensitive paper
• Wash your prints to reveal their typical Prussian blue
• Using tannin rich liquids such as tea and coffee, tone your prints, exploring a variety of different effects

What you’ll take away:
• A set of your own unique cyanotype prints
• The knowledge and skills to continue making cyanotype prints at home

Suitable for:
All skill levels. This workshop is suitable for newcomers to cyanotype, or for those with some experience who would like to explore a new aspect of this magical process.

MEMORIES IN BLUE
Cyanotype is one of the most beautiful alternative photographic processes, producing evocative images in vivid blues and whites, by exposing UV sensitive paper to UV light.

In this workshop, we will bring together the method of cyanotype as a photographic process with the concept of capturing memories, by making cyanotype prints using your own photographs, printed onto acetate to create a digital negative.

You may wish to combine your digital negatives with objects associated with them – for example lace, flowers, cutouts or small objects that hold meaning for you.

This is a chance to learn cyanotype techniques, and create some beautiful photograph-based imagery at the same time.

You will:
• Mix cyanotype chemicals and coat your paper
• Plan the layouts of your digital negatives and objects
• Expose your cyanotype prints using the power of the sun (or uv lights if the weather is poor)
• Repeat to create a set of prints based on the memories captured in your photos

What you’ll take away:
• A set of your own unique cyanotype prints
• The knowledge and skills to continue making cyanotype prints at home

Suitable for: All skill levels. This workshop is suitable for newcomers to cyanotype, or for those with some experience who would like to explore a new aspect of this magical process.

What a wonderful experience teaching cyanotype to a student yesterday! The cherry on top was receiving this gorgeous cyanotype print of Indian temples, so touched!

What you can expect:
In this workshop you will learn how to mix cyanotype solution, and prepare your surfaces for printing. You’ll arrange objects onto your UV sensitive paper and expose it to sunlight. (If the weather is poor, we will be using UV lightboxes in place of the sun).

What you’ll take away:
• A set of your own unique cyanotype prints
• The knowledge and skills to continue making cyanotype prints at home

Suitable for: Adults of all skill levels; You might be a complete beginner, or looking for a refresher.

What is a cyanotype?
The cyanotype printing technique is one of the earliest forms of photography, invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel and made famous by botanist and artist, Anna Atkins, who used the process to create innovative and beautiful records of seaweed types.

A cyanotype print is created by exposing UV sensitive paper to UV light. First, objects are laid on top of the paper and exposed to UV light. Once the print has been exposed, the print is washed in water to fix the image to the page. The result is a striking blue & white silhouette image of the object you laid on top.

Look at this BEAUTIFUL cafenol print~ a print developed in a hand made coffee, vitamin C powder and washing soda solution! I loved working with Leura yesterday. We chatted about all things photography, our shared love of darkroom processes and finding like minded people.

Exploring 35mm camera photography and negative printing was fascinating to me as I loved the creativity of manually producing the outcomes and taking images as we couldn't completely predict the results, it was like a surprise.The detail in the outcomes also made this my favourite technique as it created more atmosphere in the images.
